How to Care for Oily Skin | Skincare Tips for Oil-free skin

Skin is generally classified into 4 categories-

  1. Oily
  2. Dry
  3. Combination
  4. Normal

Out of these skin types, Normal skin is what every woman wishes to have, as this type of skin has balanced moisture, even skin tone, and minimum pores. But not every one of us is blessed with it.

In this post, we will be discussing how to care for Oily skin.

If you feel that your skin is usually having excess of oil than required then you are having Oily Skin. Oily skin occurs when the oil glands in your skin start to produce excess oil. This type of skin looks greasy and shiny due to the excess oil and sebum formation.

Pros and Cons of Oily Skin

Well most of us must be thinking that too much of oil on our skin means pimples, but Oily skin offers many benefits too-

  • Sebum(oil) is high in vitamin E, a strong antioxidant that provides free-radical protection and anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • People with oily skin have a natural moisturizer, which means it forms a barrier on the skin’s surface to prevent water loss and keep skin hydrated.
  • Oily skin tends to age slower than other skin types because of the natural moisturizing effects and antioxidant properties of sebum.
  • People with oily skin do not need to worry about fine lines, wrinkles, and flaky skin, as the oil on their skin hides them readily, unlike the people with dry skin.

Conversely, oily skin also offers a lot of skin problems too, if not taken care of. These are-

  • Acne and clogged and enlarged pores due to higher sebum/oil levels.
  • Blackheads on nose and areas of the face are a problem when you have oily skin.
  • Greasy and shiny skin throughout the day.

Tips to care for Oily Skin

1. Keep your face clean

As your skin produces high levels of oil daily, you need to balance it by following a good skincare routine. Wash your face twice a day Morning and Night with Lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. If you still feel too much oil on your skin, go for a cleanser that includes benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or beta hydroxy acid. These will keep a check on your skin’s oil balance and reduce acne.

2. Use oil-free Cosmetics

Since you already have an Oily skin, you don’t want to exacerbate it using Oily cosmetics. When shopping for cosmetics, always choose water-based or Oil-free products, especially those with direct contact with your face skin such as foundation, primer, face powder, bronzer, and highlighter.

Moreover, if you can go without foundation and other heavy creams on a daily basis, by using some herbal or less heavy creams, it would also benefit your oily skin and prevent pore-clogging.

3. Eat Healthy

What you eat is what reflects on your face, body and overall health. If you eat a lot of fried and processed foods,it would have a negative effect on your body and hence it may increase the acne and pimple formation on your skin as well as excess oil production. Always try to eat simple, homemade food along with salad and fruits to keep your skin and body healthy and hydrated.

4. Use Blotting Pads or Tissue Papers

Oily skin can be very irritating while working. But over-washing your face can be harmful to your skin. You can use tissue papers os blotting pads to gently wipe away excess oil from your skin throughout the day.

5. Choose Moisturizer Carefully

Moisturization is necessary, no matter what skin type you have. If you are having oily skin, avoid moisturizers that contain lanolin, petrolatum or isopropyl myristate. Go for a water-based or oil-free moisturizer and keep your skin hydrated.

6. Astringent

Astringent can tone your skin and help dry up excess oil from your face. But make sure you apply it to only the problematic and oily areas only. Also, check that the Astringent is alcohol-free and oil-free.

7.Weekly Face Mask

A Face Mask can help you get rid of the excess oil secretion on your face.

Application of Sandalwood, Fuller’s Earth (Multani mitti) as a face mask weekly is very good for oily skin as it gently absorbs excess oil. Other options are to apply Face Masks containing Kaolin and Bentonite clay.

Home Remedies for Oily Skin

Use honey to balance the oil and sebum level on your face. Honey is a natural remedy and has antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Honey is a natural humectant, so it helps keep the skin moist but not oily. Humectants draw moisture from the skin without replacing it.

Spread a thin layer of honey on your face, leave it for 10 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water.

2. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is known to calm the inflamed skin and absorb excess oil from the skin. Oatmeal also helps in natural exfoliation of the skin. Combine 1/2 cup ground oats with hot water to form a paste. Stir in 1 tablespoon honey/yogurt. Massage the mixture onto your face for about three minutes. Rinse with warm water.

3.Egg White and Lemon

This remedy is being used from ages to cure oily skin. Both the ingredients are known to tighten up pores. The acid in lemon helps in absorbing oil from the skin. Lemon also has antibacterial properties, so it will help in clearing up acne too.

Combine 1 egg white with 1 teaspoon freshly-squeezed lemon juice. Apply it to your face, and leave it on until the mask dries. Rinse the face with lukewarm water. If you have egg allergy, you can simply use lemon alone.

4. Aloe vera

This is one of the easiest and inexpensive treatments for Oily Skin. Just take a thin branch of Aloe vera, cut it and extract the gel from it. Apply a thin layer of it on your face during bedtime and rinse in the morning. You will see visible results on your skin with few days of application.

Tomato contains Salicylic acid, which is known to cure acne. The acid nature of tomato also helps unclog pores and helps absorb excess oil. Combine one tomato’s pulp with 1 teaspoon sugar and apply it on the skin using gentle circular motions. Leave it on the skin for 5 minutes and rinse with Lukewarm water.
